Hyperpigmentation: Removal of pigmentations in the gingiva by laser method
Abstract
Everyone has a different smile line. Some have smaller teeth, some have thicker lips. And some have excessive gum that breaks the harmony and/or “black gum”. All of those problems are now behind us with the advanced laser ablation system. It is the most reliable and effective technique that satisfies every patient and fixes the harmony. Reaching the harmony was never this easy, quick, and sterile. Hyperpigmentation is a form that used in gum treatment at the same time.
What causes hyperpigmentation?
Several physiologic and/or pathologic factors can cause hyperpigmentation. Most common cause of hyperpigmentation is physiologic or ethnic hyperpigmentation.
Is hyperpigmentation harmful?
Hyperpigmentation of gingival is an extremely common skin condition. They are mostly harmless and only disrupt aesthetically.
What kind of equipment is being used
With the safety proven diode laser, it is possible to get rid of excessive gingiva and/or black gum. The diode laser has a fiber optic delivery system with beam diameter of 320 µm, 980 nm wavelength and was operated at a 3 W irradiation power, in a continuous contact mode.

How this process is done?
In most basic terms, the laser is used on the gingival hyperpigmentation location to irradiate the gums. The cells are being forced to regenerate themselves.
Just like if a person falls, the fallen area starts regeneration and gets scab over to protect the healing process happening on the inside.
During the operation
During the operation, there will be no pain. The patients will be given local anesthesia for them to be comfortable. After the operation, a mild painkiller will be given for 3 days, which will be more than enough.
How long will the Hyperpigmentation operation take?
The operation will last 20-25 minutes. Depending on the patients’ condition, subsequent visits such as after one week, one month, and 3 months may be required.
After the operation, is there any pain or recession?
Patients had close to zero problems of bleeding, swelling, or pain. Any sign of bleeding, pain, or swelling was gone within 1 week. None of the other patients show any sign of gum recession.
Is there anything to be careful about?
It is important not to traumatize the area of the operation for 24 hours. It is important for patients to not smoke or eat hot and spicy food for at least 24 hours.
Conclusion
Without a big operation or traumatizing the gums, it is easy to fix hyperpigmentation thanks to advanced technology. The hyperpigmentation will not go back to its “black” colour. Within a couple of months, the problem is gone and the patients will have their aesthetic looking healthy gums.
