What is
Zirconium Teeth?

If the patient’s teeth has major fractures or caries, the most suitable application would be a crown application. Dental crown is a treatment method where the teeth are abraded to make them smaller and crowned with teeth prepared in porcelain.

Dental crowns vary according to the infrastructure. These crowns can be metal, zirconium, or full ceramic. The infrastructure is decided based on the position of the patient’s teeth, their expectations for their new teeth, and the material cost.

The substructure of zirconium porcelain crown is composed of zirconium.  Zirconium is a white-colored and highly resistant material.

Zirconium is covered with porcelain and placed on patients’ teeth in its final form.

Why Zirconium?
What is Glass-Ceramic Zirconium?

Technology continues to bring new materials to the field of medicine. Metal crowns have been widely used in the past but have been replaced by zirconium as they are light-proof and incompatible with the gums. Zirconium has been preferred very commonly in recent years.

For aesthetics, it is not enough for the teeth to have a white appearance. The prepared teeth need to have some variations just like real teeth. Real teeth have increased light transmittance towards the edges. To capture such a natural appearance, attention should be paid to the properties of the materials.

To prevent a solid, soulless, white appearance on the teeth, zirconium is preferred for its transparent structure. This way, patients achieve a natural tooth appearance.

Recessions may occur in the gums due to aging or different factors. Thanks to their compatibility with gums, zirconium crowns do not pose health or aesthetic problems in future years. The darkening of the gum that occurs in metal-supported crowns is not the case for zirconium crowns.

Since zirconium does not contain metals, it does not cause bad odor in the mouth or affect sense of taste. It is a tissue-friendly substance and does not cause allergies.

With its insulation properties, zirconium minimizes problems in the consumption of hot and cold foods.

When Are Zirconium Crowns Preferred?

Depending on the condition of the teeth, the treatment is decided by the specialist dentist.

1. For a Healthy Mouth and Teeth Structure: Zirconium can be applied in single-tooth crowns, restoring molars, repairing implant teeth, treating crooked teeth, and building dental bridges. It is widely used in patients who do not want to use removable prostheses and who have adequate abutment teeth.

2. For an Aesthetic Smile: Transparent zirconium is preferred to prevent a solid, soulless, white appearance on the teeth. This way, patients achieve a natural tooth appearance.

Patients often wonder if their teeth can develop caries under the crown. Since the tooth is crowned after cleaning, tooth caries is not possible.

Problems that may occur on the surface of the tooth are minimized by zirconium porcelain crowning. Zirconium crowns with their outer surface prepared with porcelain will have a slippery and smooth structure. This smooth structure greatly reduces tartar formation and staining problems.

    How Is Zirconium

    Porcelain Crown Made?

Before treatment, the mouth is examined in detail. Panoramic x-rays and photographs are taken to prepare a detailed map. After the map is prepared, the first thing is to maximize the oral hygiene of the patient. Then, the patient is checked for discomfort in the gums. This is followed by efforts to obtain a healthy and aesthetic appearance in the gums.

After everything is ready, the patient is given local anesthesia. Under local anesthesia, the teeth are cut to a certain extent, reduced, and removed from their protective layers. This is a painless procedure.

After shaping, measurements are taken in accordance with the desired design. Porcelain designs are prepared on the zirconium foundation in a laboratory based on these measurements. The design is prepared in about a week depending on the condition of the teeth and is expected to be permanently bonded. Since the teeth are reduced until permanent bonding, temporary crowns are used to give an aesthetic appearance. A few rehearsals are performed to achieve maximum satisfaction before proceeding with the permanent application.

Will I Experience Sensitivity After Applying Zirconium Porcelain Crowns?

After the crowns are applied, the teeth experience sensitivity for a certain period, about one month. After one gets used to the teeth, sensitivity disappears.

Gum recovery after the teeth are cut and reduced lasts about ten days.

Patients are expected not to consume anything for three hours after treatment. In the following weeks, they are recommended to consume hard foods slowly by cutting them.

The crowns are produced after measuring the teeth. Each crown is produced in measurements suitable for the patient’s teeth and mouth structure. As DentaFLY, we produce dental crowns specific to each patient in our own laboratory.

Zirconium determines how the teeth look. So, it is crucial that the zirconium crown be made in a suitable size for the tooth. Also, in zirconium crowns, using colors compatible with other teeth is a key element that makes the teeth look good in terms of smile aesthetics.
